Law Office Ledger, 1836-1871

The Law Office Ledger, held by the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University, is a single bound volume that lists information such as party's names, date of trial, amount of judgement, and bill of cost. For the most part, this information is in columnar form; occasionally it is presented in a narrative fashion.

There is very little data to indicate the location of the law office or trials; however, it appears to be in East Tennessee. There are cases involving the State of Tennessee and several of the names (Landon Raygan, William Woodfin, Josiah Parker) appear on the 1830 census for Washington County, Tennessee. Other surnames (Dugger, Click, Huffine) are known to be family names in East Tennessee. A trial on July 13, 1861 involved Thomas and Maranda Ensor and a man and woman with these names appear in the same household in Washington County, Tennessee on the 1860 United States Census.
