Description

The William Laban Brown Civil War Letters comprise the entirety of Series 1 from the William Laban Brown and A. R. Brown Family Papers, held by the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University. This series consists of sixty-one letters William Laban Brown wrote to his family while serving as a private in Company B, 3rd Tennessee Calvary of the Union Army. The letters describe camp life, military campaigns in which Brown was engaged, war news, and family concerns. In addition to the letters from Brown to his family, there is one letter from his brother James Madison Brown and what was probably the last letter his wife Nancy wrote to him (dated after his death in the Sultana steamship disaster of April 27, 1865).
