Description

The Henry Blackwell Photographs, held by the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University, consist of 44 2.5x2.5 inch black and white negatives, and 44 2.5x2.5 inch black and white contact prints. The negatives and contact prints focus on the August 13, 1940 flood on the Linville River Railroad (LRR), a narrow gauge railroad which ran from Pineola, North Carolina to Cranberry, North Carolina. LRR was part of the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. The August 1940 flood washed away trackand bridges and helped hasten the abandonment of LRR. Shortly The Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). The ICC granted permission to abandon the line on March 22, 1941. The negatives and prints depict washed out track, creek beds along the LRR line, abandoned track and similar scenes relating to the flood.

The current digital collection contains JPEG file surrogates created in 2023 of the complete content of the collection.
