The Washington County (Tennessee) American Bicentennial Committee Records, held by the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University, consist of agendas and minutes of committee meetings; proposed bylaws, bylaws, and the committee structure of the Bicentennial Committee; a list of members, ex officio members, and advisors of the committee; incoming and outgoing correspondence of Frank A. Tannewitz, Jr., committee chairman; a preliminary draft of the Upper East Tennessee Bicentennial Plan; a calendar of bicentennialevents in Tennessee during the year 1976; photocopies of newsclippings; miscellaneous memoranda; and brochures, pamphlets, magazines, newsletters, and miscellaneous printed material.

The records contain information concerning the approved projects of the Washington County Bicentennial Committee; a concert sponsored by the Tennessee State Bicentennial Commission and the Upper East Tennessee Bicentennial Commission; Bicentennial events in Johnson City, Jonesborough, Unicoi County, and Carter County, Tennessee; and "sites, places and districts of major historic significance" in upper East Tennessee.
