Title

Harry Martin Creager Photograph Album, 1919-1936

Description

The Harry Martin Creager Photograph Album, held by the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University, documents the work life and travels of Harry Martin Creager, Jr. between 1919 and 1936. Creager was employed as a clerk at the Mountain Home Veterans' Administration hospital ("Soldier's Home") in Johnson City, Tennessee between 1921 and circa 1929. He met his second wife, Anne Laura Saylor in about 1923 and they married in Washington County, Tennessee on May 14, 1925.

In addition to photographs of Harry and Anne,
there are photographs of Veterans' Administration staff and family and friends. Most of the photographs are identified and dated. Surnames of people in the Johnson City, Tennessee area include Bledsoe, Grimm, Mori, Nugent, and Saylor. Creager also saved photographs of the Soldier's Home nurses, mess personnel, band, and baseball team.

Prior to his service in Johnson City, Creager was at the Metropolitan [tuberculosis] Sanitarium in Mount McGregor, New York. He and Anne then relocated to the Soldier's Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Other travels took them to Cincinnati, Ohio; Shiloh, Tennessee; Big Lake, Wisconsin; and Irvine, California. Most of the photographs from California, especially those of Saylor family members, were removed from the album at an unknown point prior to acquisition by the Archives of Appalachia.
