Hugh L. White Collection
Title
Hugh L. White Collection
Description
The Hugh L. White Collection, held by the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University, consists of over six hundred photographic prints and negatives, most taken between 1900 and 1920. The collection documents the timber industry in southern Appalachia at the turn of the twentieth century and depicts logging techniques and lumber mill practices. It also documents the railroads and the railway systems of the area.
Of interest are images of Butler, Tennessee. The town was flooded by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1948. This collection has images that pre-date the flooding. Also included are many photographs of Hugh White and his wife, Eliza. The Whites traveled a great deal during the early part of the century and those travels, especially to Havana, Cuba, and New Orleans, are documented in this collection.
