Margaret N. Wimberly Speeches, 1983

Title

Margaret N. Wimberly Speeches, 1983

Description

The Margaret N. Wimberly papers, held by the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University, consists of two photocopied, typed speeches made by Wimberly on two separate occasions in the spring of 1983. The March 18, 1983 speech was delivered to volunteers participating in "Leadership Kingsport," a training program for civic leaders, sponsored by the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce. Entitled "Lovedale Lost: The Missing Link," the speech is about a time of close communal life dating back to early settlement. She reflects on an indigenous culture which is now fading. The April 18, 1983 speech was given to the Pilot Club of Kingsport. The speech covers Wimberly's recollections of area historic events and includes the story of the hanging of the elephant in Erwin, Tennessee. She recalls historic building sites, little known events, and characteristics of the cultural life of the original setters.

The current digital collection includes surrogates of the complete content of the collection.
