The John Wesley Garland Papers, held by the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University, consists of photocopies of correspondence, bonds, a will, a broadside, military orders, contracts, affidavits, and a Congressional report that were acquired by John W. Garland and his family between 1849 and 1889.

The current digital collection was scanned in 2022 from the photocopied surrogates, which were copied from the originals in 1989. The donor retained the original items.
