Regional bands: Apple Country, King’s Countrymen, First State Bluegrass Band, Skookil Express

The northeastern United States boasted many fine regional bluegrass bands in the 1970s, several of which are well represented in the Delaware collection. Phil Rosenthal, who would later join the Seldom Scene, is heard here with New England-based Apple Country String Band on the Merle Haggard classic “California Cottonfields” (1973). New Jersey-based bluegrass gospel group, King’s Countrymen, is featured on “I’m Glad I’m On The Inside Looking Out” (1974). Brothers Billy and Bob Sage led the Delaware-based First State Bluegrass Band, which included guest banjo player Don Stover on this performance of “Reuben’s Train” (1977). Pennsylvania-based Skookil Express checks in with a bluegrass standard, “Dark Hollow” (1976).
