The railroad was extended the five miles from Elizabethton to Hampton in 1906 due to the need for shipments of lumber.  The depot in this photograph is the second one, as the original depot burned.  The architectural style is Richardsonian Romanesque with the hipped roof, raking eaves and brackets.  The windows are in the Gothic Revival style, four-over-four.  Johnny Graybeal, in his book Along the ET&WNC Volume III, describes the foundation for the second depot as concrete instead of wood, and significantly smaller than the original depot, with the passenger and freight areas being nearly equal in size.  This reduction in size is correspondent to paved roads and the provision of bus service.  By 1940, passenger service was discontinued.
