Harvesting the Hardwoods: Appalachian Logging Camp Life

“Harvesting the Hardwoods: Appalachian Logging Camp Life” is one of nine presentations in the Appalachian Outreach Program, developed by the Archives of Appalachia in 1979-1980. The presentation explores the lives of men and women in the logging camps of southern Appalachia during the 1920s and 30s. Among the subjects covered in this program are working conditions, camp life, safety and medical care, and the impact of the lumber industry on the people of the region. Through interviews with the workers themselves, letters from logging company officials, and a wide range of historical photographic materials, this program explores the history of an important Appalachian enterprise and the people responsible for its success.
