From Fort Knox, KY, Goodin was sent to Rice, California for desert maneuvers where he writes his parents "More Tennessee and Virginia people floating around on this desert."  From California, Goodin went on to Camp Pickett, VA, where he tells his parents he is "enjoying better facilities."  In December 1942, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.  He was assigned to the 3rd Armored "Spearhead" Division, and assumed command of the 1st tank platoon B Company, 32nd Armored Regiment.
