Episode Three: Down in Johnson City

“Down in Johnson City” is the third of three programs in the radio series Tennessee’s Mountain Heritage, produced by the Archives of Appalachia in 1982-1983.  It features reminiscences of Johnson City residents W.B. Miller, Jim Goforth, May Ross McDowell, and John Wayne Cox about the development of Johnson City.  The speakers address the influence of changing modes of transportation, the development of educational institutions, changing styles of popular entertainment, industrial and commercial development, and the changing look of Main Street through the years.  It was first broadcast on Johnson City’s public radio station on May 15, 1983.
