Hyden Mine Disaster

Just after Christmas on December 30, 1970, a coal dust explosion in two interconnected mines killed thirty-eight of the thirty-nine men that were underground.  J.D. Jarvis wrote a song commemorating the tragedy called “Hyden Miners Tragedy,” recorded on Down Home Records in 1971.

"Now listen everybody, I’d like for you to know
What happened to these miners that left their bodies cold
It was on December the 30th
When the news got on its way
An explosion took these miners lives
I’ll never forget that day."
