Description
An account of the resource
The Jesse Larrimore Campbell Papers, held by the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University, consists of two compact discs made from a 1985 recording of Campbell recalling his life. Supplementary material includes a family genealogy, photocopies of clippings and photographs, and documents about the family by Campbell's daughter and granddaughter.

Campbell grew up in a mining town in Kentucky and in the recording discusses his playmates and other aspects of life in a coal town. He mentions that his mother was a musician and singer and that his father spent time out West in Indian Territory. There is discussion of food, family names, crops, going to school, and growing up without electricity or an icebox. In commenting on his schooling, he mentions that he taught school for a couple of weeks when he was in seventh grade and the teacher ran off with one of the students, and that when he moved to Tennessee, the teacher put him in 6th grade because he didn't have any report cards to show that he was supposed to be in the 8th grade.

The current digital collection contains a PDF file surrogate of the collection's paper materials along with streaming access to MP3 files of the audio recording created in 2022.
