The John Sherfey and Lelia Watson Letters, <span>licensed to the <a href="http://www.etsu.edu/archives" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Archives of Appalachia</a> at East Tennessee State University and held by the Knob Creek Historical Museum in Johnson City, TN,</span> consists of 135 letters and cards, primarily between John Sherfey and Lelia Watson, written during a nine-month period from April 19, 1920 to June 9, 1921. These letters provide a detailed account into the lives of Appalachians in and around Johnson City, TN in the early 1920s. In addition to documenting the developing romantic relationship between Sherfey and Watson, the letters also reference events of regional and historical significance – including discussion of a sickness that went through the area – along with other topics such as calligraphy experiments and cyphers.<br /><br />The current digital collection contains PDF file surrogates created in 2022 of the complete content of the collection.
