An account of the resource
The Edward G. DeVault Collection, held by the <a href="http://www.etsu.edu/archives" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Archives of Appalachia</a> at East Tennessee State University, consists of a physician's notebook belonging to W. B. DeVault and a Washington County, Tennessee Justice of the Peace ledger for Civil District 16 (Leesburg) kept by Samuel Conley, Justice of the Peace. The physician's notebook describes medical and surgical procedures and identifies many different types of drugs and compounds used in 19th century medical practice. The justice of the peace ledger contains names of plaintiffs and defendants in civil and criminal cases heard before the justice and the final rulings of each case.<br /><br />This digital collection contains digital scans in pdf format of both the physician's notebook and the justice of the peace ledger.

The book contains columns for When Tried, Parties Names, Amount of Judgment, Stays, Returning Officer, Date of Execution, Bill of Cost, and Officers Return. The court dates begin on June 1, 1850 and continue through July 19, 1852 with dates of execution ranging from 1850 through 1857. There is also a "Receipt to preserve Bacon" written inside the back cover.
