The collection includes city court dockets, minutes of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen and the succeeding Board of Commissioners, ordinance books, tax and assessor's ledgers, and miscellaneous documents. Some non-city records, encompassing business financial ledgers and United States Housing Authority phonograph discs, were included with the collection. Additionally, the collection includes 624 photographs, featuring aerial views of Johnson City, residential, parks and recreation, downtown, and street scenes; bicentennial celebrations; city officials, leaders, and employees; commerce and industry; municipal buildings; police and fire department photographs; street department equipment, repair, and construction photos; water, sanitation, and sewer department photographs, as well as other public works; and public-school photographs. The records were created during the period from 1890 to 1973.

The negatives and prints in the collection date from the 1940s and continue through the 1980s. However, many of the negatives are surrogates of items from the photographic collections of Burr Harrison and Mildred Kozsuch, among others, and portray subject matter dating as far back as the late 19th and early 20th centuries.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Subjects represented in the collection include: street scenes; area farms and rural landscapes; the Tipton-Haynes historical site; Maxwell family members and ancestors, theaters including the Johnson City Community Theatre; Little Theater, and Majestic Theater; hotels including the Franklin, Pardue, and Windsor; schools including Columbus Powell, Dunbar, Langston, Milligan, and Science Hill; local businesses including Empire Furniture, Sterchi's, and the Tri-Cities Airport; railroads including the CC&amp;amp;O, ET&amp;amp;WNC ("Tweetsie"), and Southern; and local families including Carter, Embree, Faw, Gump, Hankal, Jackson, Matson, Preas, Sevier, and Wilder.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The current digital collection includes positive copies of JPEG surrogates derived from the original photographic negatives in 2022 and 2023.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;N.B.: &lt;/strong&gt;For item-level searching: click the three white dots in the search box above and click "Advanced Search (Items only)."
